7 Things to Avoid When Trying to Conceive

Planning to conceive? If yes, then it’s very important that you prepare your body for the most wonderful moment of your life. And this involves making a lot of changes in your lifestyle. There are a lot of things that you may need to give up. Take a look:

  1. Cut your daily intake of Caffeine

We know that you love your morning cuppa but if you are trying to conceive, then cut down your caffeine intake. It’s because caffeine interferes with your body’s ability to absorb iron. It can make your body dehydrated and also increase your chances of miscarriage.
  2. Give up Booze

You have to give up alcohol if you are trying to conceive. Drinking excess alcohol is linked to problems in your menstrual cycle. It also affects your estrogen and progesterone levels and may interfere with ovulation. These things can make your road to pregnancy tough. Also, avoid alcohol for reducing the odds of Foetal Alcohol Syndrome.
  3. Maintain a Healthy Weight

Being underweight and overweight affects conception. The best way to find out whether you are overweight/underweight or not is by calculating your BMI (Body Mass Index). Here are the normal BMI ranges:
    • Normal weight: BMI = 18.5 to 24.9.
    • Underweight: BMI<18.5.
    • Overweight: BMI = 25 to 29.9.
    • Obese: BMI = 30 or more.

Being overweight can cause irregular or missed periods. It also increases the risk of pregnancy-related complications such as preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, and other birth defects. Cut down junk food and sugar.

  4. Avoid being a couch potato

It’s because moderate levels of exercise such as cycling, gardening, and brisk walking helps you maintain a healthy weight.
  5. Avoid stressing yourself while exercising

Although lack of exercise is unhealthy, too much of it is also not going to help. Do not exercise vigorously. Extensive work outs interfere with your menstrual cycle. It can lower your fertility.
  6. Avoid stress

We all face issues in our lives that cause stress. While a little bit of stress is fine, excessive stress can lower your fertility rate as it can affect your hormone levels and cause irregular menstruation.
If you have been experiencing high level of stress and have doubts that it might interfere with your ability to conceive, then consult a specialist immediately or try alternative ways of dealing with stress such as aromatherapy and yoga etc.
  7. Avoid smoking

Avoiding smoking is of huge benefit. Smoking may cause your eggs to develop genetic abnormalities. It also increases your risk of ectopic pregnancy and miscarriage. Smoking can also interfere with infertility treatment (such as IVF).
Smokers need more attempts compared to non-smokers. Also, men who smoke, have a lower sperm count compared to non-smokers. Smoking also affects sperm motility.
Apart from taking care of these issues, it’s better to consult the doctor and get clarity on your health during different stages of your conception.
