5 Common Myths About IVF Treatment

While some believe that IVF cost in Kolkata and other places in India is beyond the capability of the common people, making Cost one of the major factors why people don’t go for IVF treatment. Besides cost,  the other major deterrent is the various misconceptions regarding the infertility treatment formed due to some common IVF myths that makes them think that IVF treatment is harmful to the mother and baby.

These misconceptions prevent couples from seeking treatment at the right time. Often they delay going to IVF specialist at a time when they can still conceive via treatment until it is too late. When fertility starts to decline, it is rather rapid giving a very short time when treatment can give you good results.

Of course, one must consider treatment only after that have accurate information and to understand myths and facts of IVF Treatment, the wisest decision is to consult with the infertility specialist from one of the best IVF centres in Kolkata.

Dr Rajeev Agarwal, our chief IVF specialist at Care IVF Kolkata explains the 5 common myths regarding IVF treatment in this video:

Here are a few commonly believed myths around IVF:

Myth 1: IVF is never successful at first attempt:

The success of IVF rate depends on many factors like Woman’s age, Quality of eggs and sperms and the subsequent embryos formed. Tubal factors and Uterine Condition determine Implantation chances as well as the overall the fitness of the woman’s body to carry out the pregnancy.

Although it is very difficult to predict if a woman will succeed in the first attempt or will need a few attempts, results prove that

40% of IVF cases Conceive in 1st attempt.

55% conceive in two attempts

65% conceive 3 attempts

Dr Rajeev Agarwal (gynaecologist and infertility specialist), director of Care IVF (one of the best fertility clinics in Kolkata) stated that there is 40% IVF success rate at the very first attempt.

Myth 2: IVF is painful:

This is the most prevalent myth that you need to immediately lose. Very few women have complained of any kind of discomfort during their treatment. Pick up and Embryo transfers are done under General Anesthesia, take’s about 15 minutes and patients can walk out after 45 minutes and assume normal activities within 24 hours. Some women think that IVF injections are painful but this myth is completely unfounded. Because everyone reacts to things like needles, ultrasounds, and vaginal catheters differently, pain is a hard thing to gauge.  But you won’t feel any unexpected or extreme distress and any discomfort caused (rarely) is within manageable limits. However, if you do experience pain you should report to your doctor immediately.

Myth 3. IVF requires complete bed rest:

Almost every couple who have come in for treatment have asked this question. We have working women who come for Ovum pick up and go back to work. Women who have resumed normal activities and work 3 days after transfer and continued to work throughout pregnancy. There is no need to treat an IVF pregnancy any different from a natural pregnancy. You do not need to confine yourself to bed after the embryo transfer. In fact, too much bed rest can lower your success of IVF. This is because too much bed rest will prevent the normal fluctuations in your blood flow and heart rate. In fact, you should return to normal activities after the embryo transfer and get adequate rest.

However that said, a certain amount of caution is advised in any normal pregnancy and that needs to be followed. Avoid lifting heavy objects, sudden movements should be avoided so avoid public transport / two-wheelers. Opt for private transport or cab. Do not overexert yourself. You can take up pregnancy yoga to strengthen the body and prepare for delivery.

Myth 4. Baby will not be yours:

In an IVF involving your wife’s egg and your husband’ sperm, the child is 100% genetically related to the parents. Even if an Egg/ Sperm donor used, the child will still be yours as half of its genetic complement comes from one of the parents. The Most important point to remember is that you really want to have a child and IVF gives you the gift of experiencing the magical transformation of motherhood, a woman undergoes during pregnancy and birth of a child.

Myth 5: IVF babies are not Normal:

One of the most groundless Myths is that IVF will have problems later in life. There have been lacs of babies born around the world through Assisted Reproduction in the last three decades. There has been no scientific evidence to prove this myth correct. In fact, IVF and recent advances in ART like PDG/ PGS have made it possible to screen genetic abnormalities in embryos and help parents with a family history of disorders have normal children. IVF children are no different from naturally conceived children, Period.

Even children who are conceived normally are vulnerable to birth defects. Babies born with IVF have a lower risk of birth defects. This is because the selection process of oocytes and sperms make sure that good quality oocytes and sperms are selected for fertilization. In addition to that, advanced techniques like Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is employed if the partner’s sperm appears abnormal or in case the partner has a low sperm count. Under this process, the specialists select one single healthy sperm for fertilization. This greatly reduces the risk of any birth defects and abnormalities. Moreover, the specialists fertilize multiple embryos and transfer only the healthy one to the uterus.
